The Merlin Centre

Cornwall has the highest number of number of people with Multiple Sclerosis in the country but no therapy centres so Dr Derek Murphy and his wife Eileen formed The Merlin Project in 2002 to raise funds to build The Merlin Centre. The Centre is aimed at not only MS sufferers, but also the carers and family members and provides a place within Cornwall for orthodox and complimentary treatments alongside advice, counselling and support. The charity agreed that the most suitable location for such a centre would be in a quiet and rural area easily accessible to most residents of the county and not in a built up town or city. The building should create a relaxed atmosphere while considering sustainability, accessibility, future maintenance and running costs. The design had to encompass a number of things, primarily not to feel institutional. It also had to pay respect to its setting and be a Flagship building to aid fundraising. The solution was an organic design with communal spaces for social gatherings and more private areas for treatments with a sensory garden outside. Construction is underway and due to be completed by Midas Construction in early 2009.
