Wheal Martyn Museum

Wheal Martyn Museum, St Austell, is the conversion of an existing clay dry which houses shops, a café and an interactive exhibition space displaying the history of the China Clay industry, and externally there is a car park and heritage trail. The brief was also to create a new entrance space to include a more flexible exhibition area, at the same time providing wheelchair access to the existing upper floor of the museum. The design was a new rotunda entrance building in a blend of natural materials with a rendered lower level capped by a pre-weathered zinc roof and modern glazing. In this way the building reflects the character of the conversion of the original Wheal Martyn building.
