Charlestown Foundry

The Foundry is a mixed-use development on the former Charlestown Engineering Works site adjacent to the Conservation Area and within the newly designated World Heritage Site. The site is 4.208ha and on three levels, bounded by the Penzance to Paddington mainline railway, residential developments and Charlestown Road, with extensive views across St Austell Bay. There were many buildings and features within the site but few had any architectural merit and only the key ones were retained. In particular the main focal point of the development is the conversion of the stone building fronting the road to form apartments. The first phase of the development is the southern residential element providing apartments and houses. The style reflects the simple palette of Cornish architecture while paying tribute to the industrial history of the site in the form of timber boarding and galvanised steel detailing.
