Chygowlin Cottage

Chygowlin Cottage is a detached residential property set within substantial grounds and accessed off its own private drive. The property comprises the main dwelling plus a detached barn set at 90 degrees; both buildings are two storeys and provide residential accommodation. The house and barn are finished in render with a concrete tile roof and wooden windows and doors.

This project is a two-storey link between the existing house and barn to provide en-suite bedroom, office and entrance hall. The link provides a footprint of 30sqm with the overall height being 6.3m and has been designed as a subservient addition connecting the two existing buildings. The link is finished in a mix of render, slate hanging and glazing with a concrete tile roof. The design, scale and finishes have been conscious of its need to be a subservient element to the existing house and barn to ensure that the whole building is not viewed as a continuation, but allows the existing structures to remain visually distinct. This has been achieved through a lowered eaves height to the link, the set back of the building on the north and west elevations (adjacent the existing buildings) plus the use of glazing on the ground floor to provide a lightweight feel to the structure. In addition the extension has sought to take reference from the existing house and barn with the use of finished materials, roof pitch and solid to void ratios plus window proportions (to the first floor) helping to integrate the proposed structure in its context.
